Frequently asked questions on web design and development
Typically the websites I build cost from £2,500 but the final cost depends on a number of factors including:
- The size and complexity of the website
- If you need my help in producing your website content – photos, illustrations, icons and text
- If you need me to purchase a domain name and hosting on your behalf
- If you need commercial licenses for WordPress plugins or web fonts
Every website project is tailored to the needs of your business but a typical website design package includes research and planning, design, development, testing and launch.
Before the project starts we’ll talk about your goals, audience and content requirements to make sure the finished website helps you attract the right customers and actually supports your business.
The web design and development process involves me creating a custom WordPress theme, building responsive layouts so that your website works on modern devices and browsers, helping you create or format your website content, making sure any contact forms work properly, basic search engine optimisation (SEO), website security and performance optimisation.
When your website goes live you’ll receive training on how to update it, along with ongoing support if you need it.
It depends on the size and complexity of the website and what stage you’re at with creating your content but a website project can typically take anywhere from 4-8 weeks.
Yes, I can recommend and organise your website hosting for you. Over the years I’ve worked with several really good hosting companies all with UK based technical support.
The main costs after your website goes live are for domain and hosting services and these are payable directly to your hosting company and domain registrar. Other ongoing costs might include web font licenses (if your website needs a specific commercial font) or WordPress plugins that contain additional features and advanced functionality.
Absolutely. If I’ve bought the domain name and hosting on your behalf they will be transferred over to you once your website goes live. That means you’ll receive important renewal notifications and have complete control of your domain and hosting control panel. Once the final invoice is paid all the code and design work that makes up the website becomes your property.
Not at all. I’m based in Stockport and work with small businesses in Marple, Hazel Grove, Cheadle, Bramhall, Wilmslow, Poynton, Macclesfield and Glossop. However I also work remotely with a number of clients based all over the UK.

From the off he’s explained everything in very simple terms and guided me through the whole process. David Barnes, Colebarn
John’s advice and feedback were invaluable as was the support provided after the project completed. Great quality of work, very professional and easy to deal with too. Gareth Watkin-Jones, Mothax
