What album artwork taught me about responsive web design

2nd March 2026

In October last year, I bought my daughter a vintage Dansette Bermuda record player for her birthday.

It was really nice to have records in the house again although my Daughter quickly took the Dansette up to her room and closed the door. Classic teenage vibes! Feeling a little bit left out my Wife and I decided to get ourselves a record player for the living room.

One of the nicest things about getting back into records is remembering how beautiful and tactile album sleeves are. Back in the day, I spent many happy hours looking for records in Stockport and Manchester. On the journeys home I’d pore over every detail – from the track listing to the sleeve notes.

I’ve always had a soft spot for cassettes too, because they felt so versatile. You could take them to a friend’s house, play them in the car or listen to them on a Walkman on your way to work.

To me, album artwork feels like a precursor to responsive web design. When records were produced for cassette and CD formats, designers had to simplify, prioritise and adapt the original artwork while keeping its spirit and integrity intact.

Looking back, these physical formats were a masterclass in prioritisation and clarity. As a web designer, I approach each project the same way, thinking carefully about how to create a consistent experience across different screen sizes.

Good responsive design isn’t just about resizing content. It’s about using the available space intelligently, maintaining an identity and getting your message across.

So whether it’s a record sleeve, cassette artwork or a website, the principle is the same: design thoughtfully for the medium and the audience. Balance clarity, consistency and personality. Every bit of space matters – and how you design for that space is what makes a design truly effective.
